These internationally important oak woodlands, owned by Forest Enterprise, lie along the north shore of Loch Sunart on the Ardnamurchan peninsula. The local population has long recognised the importance of the woodlands for fuel, livestock shelter and visual amenity. Initial work involved the removal of 150ha of conifers and 40ha of invasive rhododendron to safeguard a core area of the oakwood. Over the period to 2020 the whole area will gradually be returned to native woodland with the complete removal of the conifers. Collaboration with adjoining landowners has enabled additional privately owned woodland to benefit from the same degree of conservation management and so restore a significantly larger part of the area to native oak woodland. Access to the area has been improved by the creation of two car parks and the upgrading of two others as well as the improvement, or construction, of nearly 7km of forest walks. A series of roadside interpretation panels was installed. A Millennium Award project has also been carried out in this area to research the archaeology of the woods.
