Palacerigg Country Park, which extends to over 300 ha east of Cumbernauld, receives an estimated 300,000 visits each year. Native woodland plays a key role in the diverse habitats of this popular park. As part of a wider forestry project two timber ‘longhouses’ of original design and construction have been built near the visitor centre from Scottish-grown timber. These provide a craft demonstration workshop and a forest education and training base to promote a better awareness of the ecological and landscape importance of forests in Central Scotland, as well as the value of the woodlands as a source of raw material. Since the opening of the longhouses in March 1998, they have hosted a year-round programme of training events, visits by school groups, and demonstrations of local woodland crafts and skills.
