Lead Organisation: Loch Lomond & the Trossachs Interim Committee
Total Cost: £311,300
Millennium Commission Grant: £85,000

Balmaha is an important “staging post” on the east side of Loch Lomond and the increasingly popular West Highland Way long distance footpath. Annually over 150,000 people enjoy this area of extensive semi-natural woods, much of which is owned and managed by Forest Enterprise. This project involved the construction of footpath running from the main car park and visitor centre at Balmaha, to create varied woodland walks for both local people and visitors. The construction of a substantial footbridge has made one route possible along the rocky loch shore. A supporting leaflet encourages people to savour and experience these important woodlands at close quarters. From the elevated position of Craigie Fort there is an opportunity to take in the magnificent views over Loch Lomond and appreciate the extensive nature of the semi-natural woodlands along the loch-sides. One section of the path from the car park through the woods is suitable for wheelchair use.
