1/034 GARELOCHHEAD OAK WOODLAND RESTORATION

Lead Organisation: Ministry of Defence
Total Cost: £46,700
Millennium Commission Grant: £4,600

Lying within the Garelochhead training area overlooking the Faslane Naval Base, this project has enabled 31ha of native woodland to be re-established in an area that had been reduced to rough grazing. Three isolated pockets of existing trees have benefited from fencing to exclude stock and the area of woodland has been increased by planting 15ha of new native trees and the encouragement of natural regeneration on the remainder of the area. Public access has been made available, subject to training exercises, from a small parking area adjacent to the public road. A leaflet explaining the work that has been done and the wildlife that can be found is available locally to schools, youth groups and residents who may wish to visit the site.
