Millennium Commission Grant: £37,000

The Argyll Green Woodworkers Association (AGWA) is a community organisation which aims to promote sustainable woodland management by encouraging and developing training, marketing and practical demonstrations. A cluster of small buildings within attractive native and non-native woodland make up the centre at Barnluasgan, near Crinan. An existing bothy has been renovated to create a space for training and meetings. In addition, the design and construction of a large cruck-frame barn and composting toilets demonstrated replicable building techniques and provided new training opportunities in traditional timber construction. AGWA offer a wide variety of woodland management training courses as well as making information available to visitors, schools and other interested groups. Locally-based woodland owners and managers can also benefit from the work of the Centre, which should help to ensure that any production from native woodlands in Argyll is done in a sustainable manner. The Barnluasgan Centre is adjacent to the Forest Enterprise project 1/054 Barnluasgan Native Woodland restoration.
