1/051 AROS PARK COMMUNITY WOODLAND

Lead Organisation: Forest Enterprise
Total Cost: £88,400
Millennium Commission Grant: £32,000

Situated one mile south of Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull, Aros Park is an important, though previously neglected, community resource comprising 200 ha of mixed native and former policy woodland. The Park has been owned by Forest Enterprise since 1959 however, the local community has played a large role in the decision-making of the future management of the Park. A survey of the local community by the High School revealed that the park is seen as a very valuable recreation resource which is extensively used by the people of the town. One of the main concerns was the extensive amount of rhododendron which had resulted in a very dark and enclosed atmosphere along many of the paths. The subsequent clearance of the rhododendron has opened up several viewpoints and revealed further potential for improvements to the Park. The project has also involved botanical and archaeological surveying, path restoration, restoration of existing woodland and the creation of new woodland through, where possible, natural regeneration and tree planting. A Millennium Award project has researched the history and development of the estate.
