Millennium Commission Grant: £415,900

Glens Affric and Cannich contain an internationally important woodland habitat that is one of the finest remaining core areas of the Caledonian Pine Forest in Scotland. A partnership between Forest Enterprise, which owns most of Glen Affric, North Glen Affric Estate and Caledonian Partnership has created a sound basis for its long-term management. Glen Affric was chosen as a “Life” (a European initiative launched in 1992) project area where the restoration of habitats and the demonstration of restoration techniques could be applicable to other parts of the Caledonian Forest. A strategic management plan has been produced for the core area of 14,535ha owned by FE and this has assisted the planning and implementation of major restoration works. The felling of more than 1000 ha of non-native trees, the rationalisation of deer fences plus an intense and integrated deer control regime have created the conditions where more than 2,000ha of woodland will regenerate naturally. Planting has been done in strategic locations to provide long term seed sources. A detailed inventory of native woodlands in the wider catchment in conjunction with Caledonian Partnership has been completed and the project is being monitored by the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology, which also carries out research in the area. The project has provided, and will continue to provide, opportunities for community participation in woodland management and an enhanced native woodland experience for the visiting public.
