This project is focused on 2 forests owned by Forest Enterprise, on Skye and at Achnashellach (Wester Ross). It has recognised the need to conserve native woodland and acknowledged the important role of recreation in informing the public about native woodlands and the communities who lived in them. On Skye, non-native conifers have been cleared from areas of native birch and oak woodland and intensified deer control measures have been introduced over a much wider area; these operations have created the conditions for expansion and restoration of a significant area of native woodland. At Achnashellach, non-native conifers have been cleared from a small remnant of native pine forest. Over 3kms of old drovers track have been restored on Skye from Kinloch to Leitirfura where one of the old croft buildings has been reconstructed; the provision of a car park has provided new opportunities for both locals and visitors alike.
