1/007 CLYDE VALLEY WOODLANDS

Lead Organisation: Scottish Natural Heritage
Total Cost: £132,400
Millennium Commission Grant: £48,000

The aim of this collaborative project between several statutory and voluntary organisations has been the encouragement of better management of native woodlands in the Clyde Valley. Historically the Clyde Valley and associated gorges were noted for their dramatic native and other broadleaved woods. More recently however, they have suffered considerable decline due to lack of management, resulting in the loss of valuable wildlife habitats and recreational opportunities. The project has raised the public awareness of these woods, promoted their restoration and encouraged active management by landowners. In addition, a local public forum has been established to involve woodland owners and foster community interest thereby providing opportunities for discussion of woodland management topics. A project officer has assisted in the preparation of management plans for several of the sites, organised demonstrations of good woodland practice and acted as a source of information on grant-aid and timber outlets. This project has brought approximately 142ha of woodland into management at 6 sites in the Clyde Valley.
