Culag Wood, which was first planted in 1847 and replanted during the 1930s, forms the backdrop to the village of Lochinver in Wester Ross. In 1992, after years of neglect, Assynt Community Council started work on bringing the woods back into management for the wider benefit of the local community and this has been continued by the Culag Community Woodland Trust with Millennium Forest support. The wood has been managed to provide wide economic, social and environmental benefits. Native and non-native timber can now be processed on site to supply a variety of local needs. An extensive network of footpaths has been established in the wood, recognising its importance as a focus for informal recreation and as an educational resource (both for school groups and as a venue for training in woodland management and crafts). A wide range of "sculptures" and thought-provoking features have been created within the wood. There will be more emphasis on replanting areas of cleared commercial conifers with native species.
