1/078 TOMNACROSS SCHOOL TREE NURSERY

Lead Organisation: Tomnacross Primary School
Total Cost: £10,800
Millennium Commission Grant: £4,900

As a result of a study of their local trees in 1994, the children of this Highland primary school established strong links with several organisations involved in woodland management. Building on this interest in trees, the school has established a tree nursery in the grounds and operates it on a commercial basis to provide stock for planting on sites identified by local residents. The senior pupils at the school have been responsible for undertaking seed collection from local native trees, propagation and the on-going management of the nursery. A polytunnel greenhouse, built as part of the Millennium Forest project, provides the necessary conditions for growing the young trees. As a result of their involvement with this project the children have picked up a wide range of practical and business skills. A quarterly newsletter is produced by the children to keep the local residents informed of their work and report on the availability of young native trees for planting in the area.
