1/089 MONTANE SHRUB RESTORATION

Lead Organisation: Highland Birchwoods
Total Cost: £82,900
Millennium Commission Grant: £26,700

Willow shrub communities found on the higher mountains of Scotland are Britain’s most high altitude shrubby vegetation. This project has carried out experimental restoration work at two mountain locations, with the aim of raising the public profile of Scotland’s rarest native woodland type. Fencing of these two areas allowed a monitoring programme to be put in place and has resulted in an increase in our knowledge of the factors affecting the survival of these plant communities. A report including an outline for future action on their restoration has been produced and followed up by a national conference, the report is available from Highland Birchwoods.
