The woodland at Berriedale on the island of Hoy (Orkney) is the most northerly native wood in Britain and, prior to the Millennium Forest initiative, the only sizeable example of native woodland in Orkney. This project has significantly increased the area of native woodland on Hoy through planting of about 5 ha (including the conversion of a conifer plantation to native woodland) and the protection of a further 5 ha of natural regeneration. There is a programme of associated research and monitoring of the health and development of the woodland on RSPB’s Hoy reserve and it is estimated that there is potential to increase tree cover to about 250ha.
