2/060 NORTH APPLECROSS WOODLANDS

Lead Organisation: North Applecross Woodlands Company Ltd
Total Cost: £1,215,000
Millennium Commission Grant: £90,000

This project represented a unique partnership of seven crofting townships and the Applecross Estate in Wester Ross, in order to achieve a large-scale woodland restoration scheme. Some 5000ha of the north part of the Applecross peninsula has been fenced to exclude deer and allow planting to create 1250 ha of new native woodland, mainly broadleaves with some Scots pine. In time, each crofting township will have at least one area of woodland which will help to provide environmental and economic benefits to the local community. This is a visionary scheme which has the potential to provide important lessons for woodland restoration in other parts of the Highlands.
