2/001 WILD NATIVE FOREST

Lead Organisation: Trees for Life
Total Cost: £115,300
Millennium Commission Grant: £25,000

This project has supported the work of the conservation charity Trees for Life with particular reference to the restoration of two key native species in Glen Moriston and Glen Affric - Dwarf Birch and Aspen. These have become so rare in this area that they are unlikely to survive without the assistance of protective fencing and a programme of propagation and planting. Trees for Life now has a base within Glen Affric at Plodda Lodge where research and propagation are carried out and volunteers can be accommodated. The project has fenced and planted two enclosures totalling 70ha, and protected numerous scattered fragments of dwarf birch to allow this tiny tree to regenerate and spread. Aspen is an important component of the native pinewoods and is being planted in strategic locations in Glen Affric where it would not return unaided. An interpretive display at Trees for Life’s main office at Findhorn provides a central point for disseminating information about this project to visitors and specialists.
