2/032 COILLE STRATH NA H-AIRDE/ STRATHAIRD & TORRIN

Lead Organisation: John Muir Trust
Total Cost: £534,800
Millennium Commission Grant: £264,000

These two adjoining crofting estates of Strathaird and Torrin on the Isle of Skye, owned by the John Muir Trust, contain approximately 300 ha of woodland. These comprise a mixture of conifer plantations and native broad-leaved woodland, parts of which were previously coppiced and much of which has been subject to grazing pressures in recent years. This project has seen the expansion and management of the existing native woodland, the promotion of crofter forestry through strong community involvement, improved access provision for visitors and residents, and interpretation and educational facilities. Tree nurseries at Torrin and Strathaird will provide trees of local origin for future planting on these crofting estates and JMT properties elsewhere. The discovery of an Iron Age settlement within the property added a new and unexpected dimension to the project.
