This pioneering project was established in response to the research finding that tree-planting on its own is unlikely to create a diverse woodland due to the lack of plant communities which are normally found in association with trees. With the help of the local communities, seed sources of wild flowers have been introduced to a total of 11ha of new native woods planted on farmland in and around the towns of Glenrothes and Livingston. Suitable flower species of local provenance were selected and sown by seed or planted as wildflower plugs after ground preparation to prevent competition from grasses and invasive species. The initial findings of this project are to be presented at a conference to be held in summer 2001.
