2/065 CLYDE VALLEY COMMUNITY FOREST

Lead Organisation: South Lanarkshire Council
Total Cost: £856,800
Millennium Commission Grant: £183,000

This project has extended and developed the work carried out by a wide range of partners between 1993 and 1996, to establish the foundation of the Clyde Valley Community Forest. New native woodlands are being developed on thousands of hectares of neglected land in and around the urban fringe of Glasgow and surrounding districts, in accordance with an approved regional strategy for Greenbelt Action. Seven local authorities are involved – West and East Dunbartonshire, North and South Lanarkshire, Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire. The partners have undertaken restoration work on a total of 16 sites, involving the planting of 100ha of new native woodland, management of 129ha of existing woodland and the construction of nearly 17.5km of footpaths. In many areas project officers have worked closely with local communities through a programme of events and consultation exercises to improve public awareness of and involvement in the project.
