2/069 CRAIGROSTAN WOODLANDS

Lead Organisation: Comer Estate
Total Cost: £202,200
Millennium Commission Grant: £80,000

Lying to the north of Ben Lomond and south of the RSPB reserve at Inversnaid the 2,400 ha Comer Estate is managed primarily to enhance its conservation value. The project has restored over 150ha to native woodland through a combination of restructuring spruce plantations; expansion of existing oak and birch woods by natural regeneration; removal of invasive rhododendron; and control of grazing deer, sheep and goats by means of fencing. Within the oak woods are the remains of past human settlements which are now accessible thanks to a new circular path which has been created from the Rob Roy car park above Inversnaid down to meet the West Highland way which runs along the side of Loch Lomond. Interpretation has been provided in the form of panels along the path and a leaflet describing the natural and historical points of interest.
