2/007 GLENCOE & DALNESS WOODLAND RESTORATION

Lead Organisation: The National Trust for Scotland
Total Cost: £333,400
Millennium Commission Grant: £74,500

Glencoe is renowned internationally for its outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities. As part of NTS’s work to maintain these assets, conservation of the important remnants of oak, birch, alder and pine woodland is a high priority. One of the management aims for the property has been the expansion of the area of native woodlands to enhance the nature conservation value while maintaining the characteristic open landscapes. Several of the remnant woodland fragments, within Glencoe and Glen Etive, have been fenced to reduce heavy grazing by sheep and deer and, although the emphasis is on natural regeneration from existing trees, some supplementary planting has been undertaken. In addition, the first phase of the restructuring of an area of conifer plantation at Clachaig has been undertaken. Visitors and the local community have been consulted and informed about the work through displays, public meetings and publicity in the local press.
