In 1995 The Scottish Wildlife Trust was gifted 305ha of public open land – mostly woodland – within Cumbernauld, together with an endowment towards future management costs. Millennium Forest funding has enabled SWT to fulfil their ambition of managing the four sites – Cumbernauld Glen, Northside Wood, Luggiebank and Forest Wood, with the long term aim of establishing a diverse network of native woodland with open access for recreational and educational use. Extensive areas of the woodland have been brought into management and a series of footpaths have been improved making use of natural corridors linking different communities within the town. The project has involved rhododendron and conifer removal with planting of native species and other works to improve the natural qualities of the woodlands. Considerable support was given by volunteers in carrying out these improvements. Interpretation leaflets and a mobile display will enable local SWT staff increase the community’s knowledge and use of this well-established resource.
