The tree and woodland resource of Scotland’s capital city was acknowledged by many as being in need of strengthening and renewal and this resulted in the production of an Urban Forestry Strategy. This project succeeded in developing a network of community woodlands and trees, on 49 publicly owned sites, in the relatively “leafless” sections of the city. Local communities, individuals and schools have been consulted extensively on the planting proposals and have been involved in carrying out significant parts of the work. The scale of the work completed to date is reflected in the figures - 49 sites, 56ha of planting; there is a programme of woodland expansion that will continue until the year 2003. This project has enhanced and improved the wildlife, landscape and visual interest of local neighbourhoods and the city as a whole, as well as expanding recreational and amenity resources for the people living in and visiting Edinburgh.
