3/113 GLEN TORRIDON MILLENNIUM FOREST

Lead Organisation: The National Trust for Scotland
Total Cost: £575,000
Millennium Commission Grant: £200,000

This NTS mountain property which extends to 6,200ha includes some important remnants of native woodland which have suffered from neglect in the past due to heavy browsing pressure from deer. Deer fencing has been erected around a number of sites to allow natural regeneration of existing pine and native broadleaves although it is intended to remove the fencing within the next 15-20 years. A further 67ha has been planted to create seed sources for the future and 30ha of invasive rhododendron have been cleared from areas of native woodland above Inveralligan House. Visitors can now enjoy the four kilometre coastal and woodland walk from Torridon to Inveralligin, a welcome alternative to the paths on the open hill, and low-key interpretation at each of the car parks along Glen Torridon.
