3/119 NEWTONMORE COMMUNITY WOODLAND

Lead Organisation: Newtonmore Community Woodland Trust
Total Cost: £194,500
Millennium Commission Grant: £43,600

Newtonmore lies in the Cairngorms Straths Environmentally Sensitive Area and is a focal point in an increasingly popular area for high and low-level walking. This community woodland project comprises a number of small sites in and around the village linked by the 10km circular Wildcat Trail. The restoration of the woodland, through a combination of planting and natural regeneration, provides a welcome contrast to the open hillsides and will help increase the biodiversity of the area. At several points along the trail walkers can read interpretation panels about the local cultural and natural history. A picnic area and all-ability trail near the railway station offers a welcome resting point with panoramic views and access to further walks.
