3/015 ANGUS MILLENNIUM FOREST

Lead Organisation: Angus Council
Total Cost: £551,531
Millennium Commission Grant: £122,522

The aim of this project has been to restore woodland cover to the 7 burghs and 1 other village within Angus Council as a nature conservation, recreation, aesthetic and educational resource. A total of 54 sites have been involved. The 83ha of new planting has been designed to link in with areas of existing natural and semi-natural habitats wherever possible. A start has been made to naturalise 16ha of existing woodland by creating the conditions under which native woodland can develop in time; native woodland ground flora has been established in selected woodlands. The woodland areas have been interconnected by a 4.5km network of signposted footpaths and cycleways. This links into the existing and proposed patterns of footpaths and cycleways within Angus Council. Community involvement has been an important element of this project, from public consultation at the initial design stage to the involvement of school children in the planting of trees in the many areas within school grounds and the planting of wildflower bulbs in these and other woodland areas.
