3/154 TYNDRUM COMMUNITY WOODLAND

Lead Organisation: Strathfillan Community Development Trust
Total Cost: £223,700
Millennium Commission Grant: £82,500

Lying just to the south of the busy village of Tyndrum this project has resulted in improved management of 92ha of land of which 85ha has been leased from Forest Enterprise and 7ha purchased from a private landowner. The aim has been to create a new native woodland and provide a new recreational opportunity for the local community and visitors. 48ha of new native woodland have been established by planting and natural regeneration, and 8ha of non-native conifers removed. In time this new woodland will complement the nearby ancient SSSI pinewood. Several new paths have been created within the community woodland and these link with the West Highland Way which passes through the site; added interest is provided by a series of eye-catching sculptures which connect with the social and natural history of the area. A new car park and interpretive panels further enhance the visitor’s experience.
