3/002 BALLAGAN GLEN WOODLAND

Lead Organisation: Scottish Wildlife Trust
Total Cost: £16,474
Millennium Commission Grant: £8,000

Ballagan Glen, in the Campsie Fells north of Glasgow, is a small but impressive gorge woodland of ash and other broadleaves. It is mostly owned, and all managed, by the Scottish Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve. The wood is an SSSI for geological and botanical reasons but had been under pressure from grazing livestock. After an agreement was reached with the landowner of the remaining part of the gorge fencing of the entire woodland was carried out in order to allow tree regeneration and expansion. Non-native sycamores have been removed and bracken controlled by cutting. Public access has been improved by means of an informal path and an information board and leaflet. Surveying and monitoring of the site will continue in order to assess the effectiveness of the management so far.
