3/310 ARDVOURLIE WOODLANDS

Lead Organisation: Ardvourlie Grazings Committee
Total Cost: £214,511
Millennium Commission Grant: £20,061

Woodlands are rare in the Western Isles and this project, one of three funded through the Millennium Forest initiative on the island chain, has created the first extensive native woodland on Harris. The crofting township of Ardvourlie has recognised the value of diversifying from their traditional dependence on sheep production as heavy grazing pressure has been degrading the quality of the land for many years. Within the shadow of Clisham, the highest peak on Harris, 125 ha has been fenced against deer and sheep and 113ha of new native woodland have been planted. A car park and 1km of new footpath enable visitors to experience the developing woodland as well as reaching a viewpoint with commanding views of the spectacular hills and seascapes of Harris.
