Callendar Wood (94 ha) is a surprisingly large area of mixed woodland lying close to the centre of Falkirk, adjacent to Callendar House and Park. The Wood features on 16th century maps and is an interesting mixture of semi-natural, policy and plantation woodland which in recent years has provided an important resource for the local community. Forest Enterprise purchased the wood in 1998, in order to develop it as a community woodland and the Millennium Forest project has assisted the badly needed restoration work. The main tasks initially have been the removal of 32ha of very dense and invasive rhododendron and improvement of the network of existing, but neglected, paths. Long term plans aim to increase the natural qualities of the wood while retaining the features of historic value. There is strong public interest in the wood and a local support group has assisted with the management work and will continue to maintain a high level of community involvement.
