3/062 CULZEAN TO DUNURE COASTAL WOODLAND RESTORATION

Lead Organisation: National Trust for Scotland
Total Cost: £198,700
Millennium Commission Grant: £65,000

This coastal strip of previously degraded, wind-battered, woodland extends for 5km from the north of Culzean Castle Country Park, to the village of Dunure in Ayrshire. These remnants are of considerable conservation and landscape interest and the project has restored a continuous strip of scrub woodland along the high-tide line. As only a very small part of the land was in NTS ownership management agreements had to be negotiated with a number of other landowners. The restoration work comprised 17.0ha of new planting, with a further 13.6ha of existing woodland and 2.1ha of important botanical habitats brought into conservation management. An interpretive panel has been erected at one of the main access points, the popular beach and car park at Croy Shore.
