Magus Muir is a 12ha woodland (predominantly birch) on the site of an unsuccessful conifer plantation, located on the edge of the village of Strathkinness, 4kms to the west of St Andrews. The wood has strong connections with the Covenanters: containing a monument to a murdered bishop and the graves of the four Covenanters who killed him! The project which aims to restore this as an area of native broadleaved woodland has seen the removal of non-native conifers, thinning of birch and some new planting. The path through the wood has been much improved and this, plus the provision of a small car park, will make it much easier for people to enjoy the site. Fife Council has led the project but it is intended that the local community will take over management of the wood in due course.
