The re-opening of their village hall in 1993 was a landmark in the revival of the Abriachan community on the west side of Loch Ness. Subsequently the Abriachan Forest Trust was set up by local people and purchased 541 ha of plantations from Forest Enterprise in the first large-scale purchase from Forest Enterprise by a community group. The community felt this was an appropriately ambitious and inspirational project to grace the start of the new millennium. Their continuing plans for improving the forest and land adjacent to the village includes restructuring of the conifer plantation, re-introduction of native species and a number of opportunities for environmental education and informal recreation. Innovative work has resulted in the reconstruction of a Bronze Age hut, shieling and bird hide as well as walks within the woods graced with natural sculptures produced by the local children and participants in the many events held within the Abriachan Community Forest. The woods and paths continue into the Woodland Trust land to the east, so creating a significant area of managed woods and recreational opportunities. See project 3/127.
